he wildfires currently raging across the state of California are producing vast amounts of smoke, significantly affecting air quality in many areas.

The situation is so bad in some locales that authorities are giving away free masks to help minimize health risks.

Smoke from the devastating Camp Fire in Butte County—which has claimed at least 29 lives, making it the joint deadliest in California history—is causing unhealthy conditions across much of the Bay Area, according to the local Air Quality Management District. The situation is expected to persist until Tuesday.

“Heavy smoke from the Camp Fire in Butte County is causing very elevated levels of particulate pollution in the region, especially in the North and East Bay,” a statement from the Air Quality Management District read. “A high-pressure system in place over Northern California and northeasterly winds are quickly moving smoke into the region and trapping it at the ground level, causing significant air quality impacts.”

Air quality in Daly City, immediately south of San Francisco, is currently at “unhealthy” levels, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In response, authorities are providing breathing masks at City Hall for residents that need protection.

The City of South San Francisco—where air quality is similarly affected—is also providing masks, which can be obtained at both SSF public libraries, the Magnolia Center and the SSF Parks and Recreation Department. In addition, California State University in Chico, which lies right next to the Camp Fire, is handing out masks to its students..

And of course, there's the whole Tide Pod ~moment~ we had to live through earlier this year — you know, the one where the government had to weigh in to remind people not to eat laundry detergent?

What happens now?

Several senators said ahead of the votes on Thursday that they are trying to find a way to get a deal that would look something like this: A short-term spending bill to reopen the government, combined with an agreement to draft a border security package. The details are still being hashed out, but more than a dozen senators are trying to pressure Trump to agree to reopen the government temporarily and Pelosi to make more commitments on border security.Roughly 15 senators will take to the floor this afternoon to make this pitch.Negotiating an end to the government shutdown: What's plan B?Sen. Rob Portman said that senators are looking for a "third way" to get the government open after the two votes fail Friday.Asked if Trump needs to say he'd open the government in the short term, Portman said: "I think so, yeah. But he needs to have some commitment that they are going to get this resolved so it's not just a short-term opening

1st Gear: No More Mr. Nice Guy

Ford CEO Jim Hackett is about done with all of this losing-money stuff and said so in an email he sent to employees, as seen and reported on by Reuters. Hackett said in the email that 2018, a year in which Ford got hammered money-wise, was “mediocre by any standard,” and that it was time to improve things.

Improvement is probably the best route, since investors aren’t happy with Ford and it’s hard to tell what the company actually wants to become at this point, given its dramatic moves to eliminate small cars in North America and “shift toward mobility” and “data.”

Ford did just announce an alliance on trucks and vans with Volkswagen, though, which should help save a little bit of money. Here’s Hackett’s admittedly vague idea on making more, as sent in the reported email, via Reuters:

Ford announced its fourth-quarter results on Wednesday, reporting a 2018 operating profit of $7 billion with a profit margin of 4.4 percent, down from 6.1 percent in 2017. Ford said last week that its target for operating margin was more than 8 percent.

“2018 was mediocre by any standard,” Hackett said in the email. “Yes, we made $7 billion last year. But think of it this way: this represents a 4.4 percent operating margin, about half what we believe is an appropriate margin. So we are aiming for much closer to $14 billion.”

Hackett did not give a timetable for hitting the $14 billion target. A Ford spokesman said Hackett was simply doing the math to show employees how the margin target translated to overall profit.

Flight From Hawaii Makes Emergency Landing At SFO After Flight Attendant Dies

© Provided by Local News RSS EN-USSAN FRANCISCO INT’L AIRPORT (KPIX 5) – A flight from Hawaii to New York was forced to make an emergency landing in San Francisco late Thursday night after a flight attendant suffered a medical emergency mid-flight and died.
Hawaiian Airlines officials said Flight 50 left Honolulu bound for JFK airport in New York around 4:20 p.m. Hawaii time (6:20 p.m. Pacific.)

About three hours into the flight, a flight attendant suffered a medical emergency. The pilot came over the loudspeaker and asked if there were any doctors on the flight, and there were several on board.

Crews and doctors performed CPR on the flight attendant, but the flight attendant died.

The flight arrived at SFO around 11 p.m., and passengers spent a couple more hours in the jet before being allowed to deplane.

“It’s just confusing, trying to figure out what’s going on. I wasn’t sure what was happening, and not too many people were,” said Damien Stack, who was on Hawaiian Flight 50. “We knew it was a medical emergency, but we didn’t know specifically what it was, until after we landed.”

Passengers were asked to book their own flights to New York, which the airline is expected to reimburse. The plane left SFO shortly after 4 a.m., but it is unclear where the plane was headed.

No additional details were immediately available.

Trump signs bill to temporarily end government shutdown without any border wall money

By JENNIFER HABERKORN and NOAH BIERMANJAN 25, 2019 | 6:45 PM| WASHINGTON President Trump announces a temporary end to the partial government shutdown Friday in the White House Rose Garden. (Jacquelyn Martin / Associated Press)President Trump on Friday announced a deal to temporarily end the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, capitulating — for now — on his demand for billions of taxpayer dollars to build a southern border wall.
A day after the Senate defeated competing proposals to reopen the government and as the financial pain from the shutdown spread across the nation, Trump said Friday it was time to end a standoff he had defended only a day earlier.
The deal — which largely mirrors what Democrats have been suggesting — includes a three-week extension of government funding through Feb. 15 and an agreement to continue negotiations on border security, including the debate over the wall.
But after relenting on his earlier demand, Trump will have little leverage in the coming weeks to change the minds of congressional Democrats about wall funding. And neither party is likely to be willing to enter another unpopular shutdown over the issue.

“Hopefully now the president has learned his lesson,” said Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.). “No one should ever undere

Late Friday, Trump pushed back against criticism of his agreement to reopen the federal government without winning a promise of new funding for a border wall. With even some conservatives casting the agreement as a retreat by the president, Trump tweeted that it "was in no way a concession" on his part.
Pressure had been building among both parties to reopen agencies immediately and pay hundreds of thousands of beleaguered federal workers who missed a second biweekly paycheck on Friday.

The shutdown began three days before Christmas when Trump and top Democratic leaders in Congress reached a stalemate over Trump's demand for a $5.7 billion wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. The impasse continued for five weeks as the president and congressional Democrats remained at odds over his insistence that any compromise include money for his coveted border wall.

"You are fantastic people, you are incredible patriots," Trump said Friday. "Many of you have suffered far greater than anyone, but your families have known or understand, and not only did you not complain, but in many cases you encouraged me to keep going because you care so much about our country and our border security."

Trump Escalates Criticism Against Sen. McCain, 7 Months After His Death

President Donald Trump again lashed out against the late Arizona senator saying, “’I was never a fan of John McCain and I never will be.” The comments came after he tweeted more scorn over the weekend. McCain’s daughter Meghan said that Trump had a “pathetic life” and “will never be a great man.”(Published Tuesday, March 19, 2019)

****** one up before they’re gone

December 29, 2018Whether it’s the better visibility or the extra room to carry passengers and large cargo, SUVs and trucks make the most sense for many drivers. Potential Savings Off MSRP: 7.5%
Estimated Monthly Payment**: $627
Fuel Economy MPG (City/Hwy): 22/28

2019 Chevrolet Colorado
ZR2 Crew Cab Short Box 4WD Automatic
