What’s makes this car special? For starters, Toyota only plans to build 1,500 so it certainly won’t be another everyday Corolla. As the name suggests, it’s a package only offered on the hatchback, and you can only get it in one color – Supersonic Red. The finish is contrasted with exclusive black 18-inch alloy wheels and plenty of black trim where you would normally find chrome. Toyota then adds its own body kit – also finished in black – that includes side skirts, a front splitter, and a black roof spoiler. Special Edition badges wrap up the package.

Those 1,500 lucky Special Edition customers also get black-painted 18-inch alloy wheels and a "bold" body kit designed to top anything from the aftermarket. There's a front splitter, side skirts, black rear roof spoiler, a rear bumper garnish and Special Edition badge. As the Special Edition is based on the SE CVT trim level, there will be no manual gearbox option.
In addition to the special paint and exterior upgrades, the Special Edition includes the Corolla Hatchback's Enhanced Cargo Space option, which lowers the cargo floor to add six cubic feet of capacity, for a total of 23 cubic feet behind the second row. The option replaces the spare tire with a tire repair kit.

It is dressed out with an exclusive body kit and striking Supersonic Red paint for sport hatchback fans who like their cars with expressive styling and bold colors.
Toyota added it will offer just 1,500 of these Special Edition red-hot hatches for the 2021 model year, which starts arriving in late summer.

Interestingly, Toyota says the 2021 Corolla Hatchback Special Edition “foreshadows even more excitement still to come in the hatchback segment” which we hope is an allusion to the GR hot hatch the automaker has promised North America.

The Corolla Hatchback Special Edition headlines the updated 2021 Corolla lineup, which adds several style, safety and practicality upgrades. Customers can now choose between two new colors (Magnetic Gray Metallic and Wind Chill Pearl), which are both available with the Black Roof option. The SE Nightshade Edition returns for 2021, adding blackout trim and blacked-out 18-inch alloy wheels to the customer’s choice of Classic Silver Metallic, Midnight Black Metallic or Super White exterior color. As with the Special Edition, the SE Nightshade Edition comes with the CVT as standard.

If Toyota is smart about the Toyota Corolla Sport GRMN, it’ll skip the rally-racer marketing charade and continue the subdued sentiment of the base Corolla: a sports car in disguise. If it comes off as an average car for the average buyer simply looking for a next-level trim, Toyota will see success. More people will see first-hand what Toyota is capable of building. Something the low-volume Supra couldn’t dream of achieving.

Car and Driver is reporting that the 2021 Corolla sedan is getting a new sport package called Apex, which will add some performance and appearance upgrades to the SE and XSE trim levels. The Apex will still be powered by the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 169 horsepower, which is optional on the sedan, but standard on the Corolla hatchback.

Toyota didn’t offer any insight when we asked about the Apex Edition, but as with previous official teasers, we were told that more Corolla news would be forthcoming. A sporty Corolla sedan certainly sounds delectable, but we’re really waiting patiently for the GR Corolla rally-racer that’s all-but-guaranteed at this point.
