Why not offer it on the hatchback? Because Toyota recently unveiled a sporty appearance package for the hatch, appropriately named the Hatchback Special Edition. It gets black 18-inch wheels, black trim, and a modest body kit in the form of a black front splitter, side skirts, and a roof spoiler. As such, it wouldn’t be a stretch to see the splitter and side skirts mounted to this Apex Edition sedan, along with a decklid spoiler of its own.

A blind spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert is now standard on XSE trims and available on SE models as part of the SE Preferred Package. Toyota also added two rear-seat-mounted side airbags to the Corolla Hatchback, giving it 10 airbags in total.

The 2021 Corolla Hatchback also has two new body color options: Wind Chill Pearl and Supersonic Red. Both shades are available with the Black Roof option, and the rest of the color roster for 2021 includes Classic Silver Metallic, Midnight Black Metallic, Galactic Aqua Mica and Blue Flame.

The Toyota Corolla hatchback has sponged up all the headlines lately thanks to the imminent Corolla Sport GR and "Special Edition." Product planners haven't forgotten about the sedan, according to a piece in Car and Driver, although the goodies on the way are suited for the more conservative sedan buyer. The Apex Sport Package is a cosmetic suite for the mid-grade SE and top-grade XSE trims that should become available "within the next few months." We don't much information on it at the moment, leaving the specific bodywork changes in the category of known unknowns. What is clear is that the 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque won't be touched. Opting for the SE trim opens up the chance to take control with the six-speed manual, but the CVT-equipped SE and XSE are also on the menu.

If you’ve been following Toyota news at all lately you may have seen the GR Yaris making the rounds — a 268-hp, three-cylinder-powered hot hatch with a six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. When revealed, there was an outcry to bring it to the U.S., and Toyota has seemingly confirmed that a different Gazoo Racing-tweaked hot hatch would be coming to our shores. The Special Edition Corolla Hatchback, available late in the summer … is not it.
